Male escort in La Graciosa

Where time stands still.

At the centre of Europe’s largest marine reserve, the eighth of the Canary Islands is home to a few hundred people and two small villages, and has no asphalt roads: a quiet paradise made only of sand tracks and boats in the harbour.

What can we do together?

Not to be missed

The pale sand of Playa de las Conchas, with the islet of Montaña Clara on the horizon

Playa de las Conchas

A wild stretch of golden sand swept by wind and waves, overlooked by the red outline of the volcano and facing the uninhabited islets.

Caleta de Sebo from above, with the white houses, the harbour and the sandy streets

Caleta de Sebo

The beating heart of the island, a quiet fishing village of white houses and streets of fine sand, built around the harbour.

The yellow and ochre volcano of Montaña Amarilla above a small turquoise cove

Montaña Amarilla

A majestic volcanic cone in shades of yellow and ochre, standing out against the turquoise of the sea in a unique contrast of colour.

Landscapes and nature

  1. Playa Francesa

A splendid beach of pure white sand washed by calm, turquoise, clear waters reminiscent of Caribbean scenery, ideal for snorkelling and easy to reach on foot or by bicycle along the coastal tracks.

  2. Playa de la Cocina

A hidden cove sheltered from the wind, set right at the foot of the rock face of Montaña Amarilla, where the sea, still as a swimming pool, blends with the warm colours of the volcanic earth.

  3. Pedro Barba

The island’s second, tiny settlement, a haven of peace made up of a few traditional white cottages and gardens of succulents, with no shops and looking out over a small, secluded beach.

  4. Montaña Bermeja

A volcanic hill of a distinctive brick-red colour in the north of the island, whose summit you can climb to take in a breathtaking view that ranges from unspoilt beaches to jagged cliffs.

July

Virgen del Carmen

The deeply felt patron saint’s festival that brings the island to life in mid-July: the fishermen carry the statue of the Virgin aboard a fleet of decorated boats, creating an evocative and moving procession at sea.

At the table

Special mentions

  • A grilled fish with papas arrugadas, mojo and white wine, in front of the boats in the harbour
Catch of the day Caleta de Sebo Freshly landed vieja, split open and grilled, with papas arrugadas and mojos, facing the boats in the harbour.

La Graciosa reminds me how easy it is to leave everything behind: the streets are made of sand, bicycles take the place of cars and shoes soon become an optional accessory. A tiny island, where the world shrinks to just the right size for two.
